Akilah Barrett is the founder of Akilah’s Essentials, an organic and herbal body care business.
Akilah's Essentials offers body care products made with organic and fair-trade ingredients and has a commitment to be completely plastic free by the year 2025.
Arika is a STEM educator based in the Atlanta, GA area. The inspiration for Akilah’s Essential’s came from her background in environmental science and the herbal knowledge passed down from her grandmother.
Akilah won first place in the 2023 BGV NextGen Pitch Competiton and was one of 10 women business owners selected to participate in the first cohort of Chama Capital’s Capital Concierge Program.
Q: What is your personal mission? What drives you?
I am driven by the desire to make the world a more sustainable place. It is very important to me that we treat the earth with kindness and leave it a better place than we found it.
Q: What inspired you to start Akilah’s Essentials?
I was inspired by my background in environmental science and the herbal knowledge my grandmother has passed down to me.
Q: What is your definition of success?
Success to me is achieving your goals no matter what those goals are.
Q: What products/services does your company currently offer?
I offer an array of herbal body care products including body butters, shower steamers, bath salts, and body oils.
Q: What's the #1 piece of advice you would give to a woman business owner who is just getting started?
Don't wait until everything is perfect. It will never be perfect. Instead, you will perfect your business along the way.
